What is Greenwashing? How to Spot It and Avoid It.

Greenwashing—a term that evokes images of deception, manipulation, and unethical practices. But what exactly does it mean? According to Investopedia, greenwashing refers to when a company makes false or misleading claims about the environmental friendliness of its products or its overall positive impact on the environment. While we believe that companies engaged in intentional greenwashing should be held accountable, it's important to recognize that not all cases of exaggerated eco-friendly efforts stem from malicious intent.

Sometimes, companies genuinely invest in eco-friendly practices and wish to highlight their efforts to build a positive brand image. However, in their eagerness to promote their sustainability initiatives, they may oversimplify or exaggerate their achievements. In other instances, brands may lack accurate information about what truly constitutes a sustainable improvement, leading to unintentional misinformation in their marketing communications.

Another common scenario arises when companies attempt to address one environmental issue but inadvertently create new problems with their solutions. This often occurs in packaging, where brands strive for "curbside recyclability" without considering the broader environmental impacts of the materials they substitute.

Given these complexities, it's crucial to view greenwashing on a spectrum.
